The Good Doctor Season 2 Episode 1 Review

The Good Doctor is a medical drama series that follows Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, who works at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. The show is based on a South Korean series of the same name and is created by David Shore, who also created House.

The second season of The Good Doctor premiered on September 24, 2018, with the episode titled "Hello". The episode marks the final appearance of Dr. Jared Kalu, played by Chuku Modu, who leaves the hospital to work in Denver. It also introduces Lisa Edelstein as Dr. Marina Blaize, the oncologist who treats Dr. Aaron Glassman, played by Richard Schiff, who has been diagnosed with brain cancer.

The episode revolves around three main storylines: Shaun's proposed treatment for a homeless patient with schizophrenia, Claire's attempt to convince Melendez to perform a risky heart surgery on a young woman, and Glassman's struggle to accept his condition and his relationship with Blaize.

Shaun and Jared's Farewell

Shaun and Jared are assigned to work at a mobile clinic for homeless patients by Dr. Marcus Andrews, played by Hill Harper, who has taken over as the president of the hospital. There, they encounter Harry, a man who suffers from disorganized thinking, paranoia and delusions. Shaun diagnoses him with schizophrenia and notices a boil on his gums that could indicate a bacterial infection. Jared suspects that Harry might have meningitis and insists on taking him back to the hospital for a lumbar puncture, against Andrews' orders.

At the hospital, the test results come back negative for meningitis, and Andrews threatens to report Jared to his new boss in Denver if he does not return to the mobile clinic immediately. Jared is angry and frustrated, but Shaun decides to accompany him on his last day. Jared points out the irony of Shaun's refusal to be by Glassman's side as he begins his cancer treatment, while he himself is willing to risk his career for a stranger.

Shaun realizes that he has been avoiding Glassman because he is afraid of losing him, and decides to visit him at his home. He apologizes for not being there for him and tells him that he loves him. Glassman is touched by Shaun's gesture and hugs him.

Claire and Melendez's Conflict

Claire and Melendez are treating Mia, a young woman who has a congenital heart defect that causes her heart to beat too fast. She needs a surgery to implant a device that will regulate her heartbeat, but there is a complication: she is pregnant with twins. The surgery could endanger the lives of the babies, but without it, Mia could die from cardiac arrest.

Mia wants to have the surgery, even if it means risking her pregnancy. She says that she has always wanted to be a mother, but she also wants to live. Her husband, however, disagrees. He thinks that they should prioritize the babies over Mia's life. He says that he loves her, but he cannot lose their children.

Claire sympathizes with Mia and tries to persuade Melendez to perform the surgery. She argues that it is Mia's right to choose what to do with her body and her life. Melendez, however, refuses. He says that he cannot take the chance of killing two innocent lives for one uncertain outcome. He also accuses Claire of being biased because of her own experience of losing her mother.

Claire does not give up and seeks help from Andrews, who agrees to override Melendez's decision and allow the surgery. Claire is happy, but Melendez is furious. He tells Claire that she has crossed a line and that he will never trust her again.

Glassman and Blaize's Tension

Glassman is preparing to start his chemotherapy under the care of Blaize, who happens to be an old acquaintance of his. They have a history of clashing over their medical opinions and personal styles. Blaize is blunt and sarcastic, while Glassman is sensitive and stubborn.

Glassman does not like Blaize's approach and questions her every move. He also tries to avoid talking about his feelings and fears about his cancer. Blaize calls him out on his denial and resistance, and tells him that he needs to face his reality and trust her expertise.

Glassman eventually opens up to Blaize and admits that he is scared of dying. He also reveals that he has a daughter, Maddie, who died in a car accident when she was 18. He says that he never got over her death and that he feels guilty for surviving her. Blaize listens to him and offers him some comfort and support.
